This requires considering the different QoS requirements for the four UMTS traffic classes defined by the 3GPP (conversational, streaming, interactive, and background), which links with topic 3. The UTRAN dimensioning requires considering appropriate traffic models (topic 8) for each traffic class. In our studies, we have investigated some traffic models for the dimensioning of UTRAN interfaces. These models are simple, but capture the essential characteristics of UTRAN (protocol stacks, different scales of time, influence of UMTS air interface, etc). We have also developed a simulation model for UTRAN to carry out performance evaluation studies (topic 9) for different traffic mixes and UTRAN configurations.
