Expertise: Phuoc Tran-Gia is the head of the Dept. of Distributed Systems. The research activities of the department focus on performance analysis, dimensioning, and optimization of distributed systems. Three major topics are currently matter of research using queuing theory, probability theory, stochastic processes, simulation, and optimization theory: (1) performance evaluation of broadband communication systems and future IP networks, (2) planning and analysis of mobile communication systems, (3) modelling and analysis of manufacturing systems. With regard to the action of COST 290 the expertise of the department lies in the traffic modelling of Internet applications and in the performance evaluation and planning of mobile networks. In these areas the department had numerous cooperations with the industry including Siemens (ICN and ICM), Nortel Networks, Vodafone Netherlands (former Libertel), T-Mobile International, etc. Further, the department was, with Phuoc Tran-Gia as chairman, Germany's official representative in the European COST-257 project, which focused on the impact of new services on the performance of broadband networks. Now, the department participates actively in the successor project COST-279 where Phuoc Tran-Gia serves as vice-chairman. Activity related to the proposed action: Expertise: Dirk Staehle is working at the Dept. of Distr. Systems at the Univ. of Würzburg since 1999. During this time he was active in two research projects with the strategic radio network planning groups of Vodafone Netherlands (former Libertel) and T-Mobile International. The research topic of the first project was the Source Traffic Modelling of Wireless Applications and a simulative study of the performance of the Internet access with GPRS based on this traffic model. The focus of the ongoing project with T-Mobile International is on UMTS radio network planning where analytic methods were developed in order to derive coverage and capacity of UMTS networks for circuit- and packet-switched traffic. Furthermore, he is active in the COST 279 project where his focus is also on the performance evaluation of the UMTS radio network.
